Gourmet Wine Experience

This tour operates from 1st November 2013 – 30th April 2014

Depart Picton 10.00am or Blenheim 10.30am

Your day begins at Johanneshof Cellars where you will experience the passion and flair of a boutique wine producer. Visit the underground cellars resonant of bygone centuries through which the modern winemaking craft has evolved. Here vintage harvests rest and mature 20 metres below ground, in New Zealand’s first underground rock cellar. Taste some of the finest boutique wines, all handcrafted and amongst New Zealand’s most awarded aromatic wines.

Travel from the boutique to the iconic. Your next stop is Wither Hills Winery on the southern side of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley,  in the lee of the Wither Hills range. The winery and cellar door is an elegant blend of contemporary design and comfortable sophistication − an ideal showcase for Wither Hills’ superbly-crafted wines, in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Your exclusive experience here is a vertical tasting of a range of exclusive wines and introduction to the vines library and harvesting at Wither Hills. Wither Hills will profile various single vineyard parcels and vineyard characteristics, before you try your hand at blending your own Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
Then to finish, you will be taken through a tasting of other Wither Hills wines.

Your lunch break is at the boutique Hans Herzog Estate, offering a vast array of highly-acclaimed fine wines and world-class cuisine. Enjoy a tour of the single vineyard winery and barrel hall followed by a three-course gourmet lunch, with your choice of wines, in the Mediterranean garden bistro.

Arrive at Cloudy Bay – the Marlborough winery synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc. Cloudy Bay has built a loyal following for its captivating style, but just like the wines, there are many layers to the Cloudy Bay story.  There’s the dedicated vineyard crew delivering ripe, concentrated fruit to an inquisitive, free-thinking team of winemakers. And there’s the inspiring environment in which they work… a pure and pristine place of awesome beauty that’s blessed with a unique South Pacific terroir.  Together they enhance the distinctive flavours of Marlborough and create a continually evolving range of wines that capture the essence of this special place.

The last sensational stop of the day is Makana Chocolate Factory – a delectable combination of assorted handmade chocolates. See the craftsmen creating the chocolates and taste the results. Take home a delectable chocolate truffle courtesy of Sounds Connection to finish off your special Marlborough day out.

Please note, on rare occasions some venues may change on the day, due to circumstances beyond our control, minimum of two people required.

  • Congratulations to St Clair Wines at Bragato
Saint Clair Family Estate Champion Dessert Wine
    31 August 2014

Saint Clair Family Estate is world renowned for exceptional wines and consistent award success particularly with the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir varietals. On this occasion it is their Noble Riesling that wins a top award.

Trophy winners for the Bragato Wine Challenge were announced on Thursday night at the Marlborough Convention Centre. The Saint Clair Godfrey’s Creek Reserve Noble Riesling 2013 was awarded the esteemed Champion Dessert Wine. Saint Clair grape growers John and Lynne Walsh provided the exceptional fruit for this wine. John said “I spend all my time trying to prevent botrytis in my vineyard, but this year the winemakers suggested we leave a few rows to allow the rot to occur. Credit must go to the Saint Clair winemakers, Hamish Clark and his team who worked their magic making this exceptional trophy winning wine.”

The judging panel led by Ben Glover described the wine as “just a hint of that paraffin, bees wax like aroma, you then enter into the heavenly scent of apricot and honey played out on the palate and also providing great enjoyment – fantastic wine.”

A Bragato gold medal was also awarded for the Saint Clair Pioneer Block 5 Bull Block Pinot Noir 2012 from the vineyard of Robert and Heather Goulter.

The Bragato wine awards recognise viticulture excellence and Saint Clair Family Estate prides itself in achieving distinction in the vineyard. This quality is reflected in the assortment of medals and trophies awarded from not only this unique wine show but also many others around the globe.
